Gerrit Jan Meulenbeld (Borne, 1928) studied medicine and Indology in Utrecht. After his artsexamen in 1954 he founded on psychiatry. In the end of sixties he came back into contact with Indology and in 1974 he earned a Ph.D. cum laude on his dissertation on the Indian medical science. The translation of Madhava Nidana,promoted by Dr.J.Gonda, is still an unparallel work in the field of translation of Ayurveda texts to English. Immediately after receiving his doctorate began Meulenbeld to write the historical overview of the Indian medical literature. Since 1978 he worked as a research fellow at the University of Ghent and psychiatrist at the Van Mesdagkliniek in Groningen. In 1986 accepted a full-time job at the Mesdagkliniek : Indian Institute of Language, he worked until his retirement in 1988.
